A study of fertility among the working classes of Chartres in the XVIIIth century , based on a reconstitution of 630 "closed" families, reveals that the marked decrease in mean family size observed over this period is the result of several birth control stratégies ; two strategies appear jointly in urban families and then spread to suburban ones, whereas a third strategy which arrives later does not af fect the latter. Many couples practise birth control at the beginning of the XVIIIth century, and no doubt even earlier .
